Andrew Joseph Dwyer, MD passed away October 26, 2017 after a short battle with cancer in Bethesda, MD. He was born January 7, 1947 in New Haven, son of the late John J. and Anna Greene Dwyer. He was a graduate of Notre Dame High School in New Haven, received his BA, MA degrees in mathematics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute prior to attending Creighton School of Medicine. He served an internship and residency in radiology at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven. Following his residency in 1977, he joined the Radiology Department at the Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health (NIH) where he worked until his death. In 2007, he retired, as Captain, Commissioned Corp Officer in the US Public Health Service. Andrew was humble, known for quick wit, passion to teach and mentor others, tireless work ethic and extensive research writings. The family would like to extend thanks his colleagues and Clinical staff at NIH, Montgomery Hospice, caregivers Sharo, Luz, Tina and his devoted longtime home assistant Rosa, for their excellent care, support and outpouring of compassion during his illness. He was preceded in death by his only sibling Richard T. Dwyer and survived by cousins Nancy Lucas, Wethersfield, CT and Kathy Mulligan, Mooresville, NC.
Friends may call Monday, November 6 from 10:00-11:00 A.M. at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St. Branford. A full military graveside service will follow at St. Lawrence Cemetery in West Haven at 11:30 A.M. In lieu of flowers friends are asked to donate to the Montgomery Hospice Foundation, 1355 Piccard Drive, Suite 100, Rockville, Maryland 20850, or Creighton University, School of Medicine, P.O. Box 30282, Omaha NE 68103, where they intend to direct funds to a scholarship in Andy’s name.
