Beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Anna G. Webb, of New Haven, formerly of Branford died Friday September 30, 2016, of heart failure at Yale New Haven Saint Raphael's hospital.
Mrs. Webb was born in Branford October 2, 1925, daughter of the late Richard and Lucille Lincoln Griffin. A devout member of St. Stephens AME Zion church, Mrs. Webb was actually born at the address where the church stands today, 31 Rogers Street. As a member of the church, she was a delegate to the Annual AME Zion Methodist Conference and served as the Secretary of the Conference under Bishop Walls. She also was a member of the Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society and of the Gospel Chorus. Until her death, Mrs. Webb was the longest active member of St. Stephens.
Mrs. Webb's career started in nursing, where she received a nursing degree at the Brewster School of Nursing in Jacksonville, Florida. She worked at the Yale New Haven Hospital for many years, finishing there as the secretary to the Director of Nursing. Her second career was as a secretary and typist. She went to work at SNET and while there she enrolled in and graduated from the Connecticut School of Court Reporters. After graduating she worked as a legal secretary in several New Haven law offices and then as court stenographer and notary public. She said that her purpose for returning to school was to show her children how important education was. She returned to SNET for many more years and retired there.
Mrs. Webb is survived by her three children, James (Mary) Burruss of Nantucket, Massachusetts, Melvin (Diana) Burruss of Louisa, Virgina, and Beverly Brazzell of Branford; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by six sisters and one brother.
Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of her life this Saturday morning, October 8, at 11:00 in St. Stephens AME Zion Church, 31 Rogers St., Branford. There will be an open casket viewing prior to the service from 9:30 – 11:00 at the church. The ceremony will be followed by a burial in Branford Center Cemetery and then a repast back at St. Stephens.
