Dr. Frank E. Whelan, PhD., of Branford, died Monday October 14, 2013 in Yale-New Haven Hospital with his family by his side. He was the husband of Diane Strandberg Whelan.
Frank was born April 9, 1941 in New Haven, son of the late Michael and Beatrice McKeon Whelan. He served his country in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam era in the Battery D 2nd MSL Bn 55th Artillery, and was a proud supporter of the U. S. military. Frank was a member of American Legion Post 83 and was chairman of the Branford Parade Committee. He was Professor Emeritus at Southern Connecticut State University, Business Department. Frank was a longtime founding member of the Friday afternoon "Mensa" meeting club at Bill's Seafood with his best friend and fellow founding member, Tom Riley, and all of the other regulars.
Besides his wife, Frank is survived by his daughters, Denise Whelan (Sean Rubano) of Branford, and Melissa (Don) Wallace of East Lyme, CT; his granddaughters, Jennifer and Jessica Wallace; his sister Patricia (Thomas) Riley of Madison; his brother James Whelan in CA; his brother-in-law and wife, Donald and Linda Strandberg of VT; nieces and nephews, Dan Whelan, Don Whelan, Jennifer Stockwell, Scott Strandberg, Megan Kenney and Michael Riley; his great-nieces and nephews, Bridget Kenney, Mary Ella Stockwell, Andrew Stockwell, and Samantha and Justin Strandberg. He is also survived by his godson, Mark Patrylak.
Relatives and friends may call Thursday from 5 – 8 PM at the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main Street Branford.
