Gilda Castagna Robertson of Stony Creek, died peacefully at the Guilford House on February 20, with her family of generations by her side. She left this Earth surrounded by love to carry her to her new home with the Lord. She was the beloved wife of 74 years to the late Alexander “Scotty” Robertson, who died a year ago.
Gilda leaves her three children, Sharon (John Schnitzke) Forte, Mark (Carolyn) Robertson and Anita (John) Case; her eight grandchildren: Jackie, Ron, Scott, Valerie, Kristen, Alex, Alexander and Alyssa; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her sister Bonnie and her brother Frank. Gilda delighted in the company of all the generations of children. Every child held a special place in her heart.
Gilda was born in New Orleans, LA, October 15, 1922, and she was a graduate from LSU with a teaching degree. After marrying Alex in Louisiana at the end of WWII, they moved to Stony Creek, Alex’s home, where she embraced and appreciated a simple but full life for 73 years.
Gilda’s younger years in the north were spent enjoying friends and times on the Thimble Islands. She had a new family through her husband’s two brothers and three sisters, along with their spouses.
Gilda could be seen by all who knew her, walking the couple of miles to the beach each summer day and swimming her laps. She acclimated to the cold, bitter winters and continued to share in her walks with her husband by her side through all seasons. She was delighted and impressed by the beauty of nature in every step.
Another love of Gilda’s was dancing. She, along with her husband, would grace every dance floor they stepped on. To watch them glide across a dance floor was a beautiful sight.
Gilda’s 95 years with us provided an enormous amount of guidance, love and devotion.
