Hugh S. Cafferty, born July 25, 1942, passed away peacefully on June 11, 2018 after a brief stay at Branford Hospice. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Eva and Francis Cafferty as well as his two brothers, Robert F. Cafferty and John P. Cafferty.
Hugh proudly served his country in the US Air Force after graduating from Branford HS in 1960. Following the completion of his Bachelor’s degree in Special Education in 1969, he received a Master’s Degree and 6th year all from Southern Connecticut State University. First as a teacher and then as the Administrator of Special Services, Region 17, Hugh spent his career advocating for the needs of children until his retirement in 2000.
Hugh enjoyed serving and socializing in a variety of activities outside of work and throughout his retirement. He served as President of the SCSU Alumni Association; was an active member of the Branford Elks Lodge holding the title of Exalted Ruler twice; participated in parades and musters with the Ancient Mariner’s Fife and Drum Corps Color Guard and proudly completed eight marathons. In his spare time he enjoyed running, playing handball, billiards, golf, fishing, camping, traveling, following his favorite NFL team (the Giants) , listening to his favorite music ( Jazz , Soul and R&B), and being near the ocean. Having fun with family and friends was the common thread throughout his very active life.
Hugh is survived by his wife of 50 years, Fay Cafferty, his daughter Heather Jossem and husband Nicholas Jossem, his son Bryant Cafferty and his wife Monica Cafferty along with two granddaughters, Caitlin T. Jossem and Ava F. Cafferty.
His family will receive relatives and friends at the W. S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 N. Main Street, Branford, CT on Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be a military burial on Tuesday at 1:00 P.M. for family and close friends at the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery in Middletown, CT.
