In Guilford, April 25, 2010, James Frederick Welch of 19 Sandra Drive, Branford, husband of the late Nancy Leonard Fitzgerald Welch. Father of Elizabeth Welch McGuigan and her husband Daniel of Madison, Marian Welch Evans and her husband Daniel of San Bruno California, James Welch of Milford, and Nancy Welch of Branford. Grandfather of Margaret Marian McGuigan, Daniel Evans, and Kathleen Evans. Uncle of Catherine Welch Donahue, her husband William and son Trevor, and Mary Ellen Welch Towers and her husband Terrence. Eric Tutu was his devoted caregiver for the last 12 months. He was predeceased by his twin brother William Welch and sister Elizabeth Welch Collett.
Born March 10, 1922 in New Haven, son of the late James F. and Elizabeth "Bessie" Sullivan Welch, he graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1940. He received his Bachelor's Degree from New Haven State Teacher's College. After serving as a radio operator in the Merchant Marines during World War II, he received his Master's Degree from NYU and a Sixth Year Certificate from Fairfield University.
He was an educator in the New Haven School system, serving as principal at nine different schools, starting at Benjamin Jepson, and retiring in 1980 as principal of Bishop Woods. He was a communicant of St. Therese Church in Branford.
He enjoyed the monthly luncheons with "the gang" from Bishop Woods at various New Haven area restaurants, and he and his twin brother Bill looked forward to their monthly lunches at Brazi's with the New Haven retired principals.
"Paca" was loved by his grandchildren, and he loved to travel to visit with them. His trips to California, New Hampshire, Cape Cod, Boston, Disney World, and the UCONN campus formed special memories for him. In addition to his family, his church, and his country, he also loved his Connecticut Huskies.
Funeral from the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 504 Main St. Branford Wednesday at 11:00 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 at St. Therese Church in Branford. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Branford. Friends may call Wednesday morning from 10:00 to 11:00. Memorial donations may be made to St. Therese Church, 105 Leetes Island Rd.
