Margaret T. Clerkin of San Diego, California peacefully passed away on February 24, 2018 while receiving hospice care at her brother and sister in-law’s home in Madison, CT. She was the beloved sister of Thomas, and sister in-law of Barbara, and devoted aunt of Terence, Peter, and Kara, all of New York City. She was preceded in death by her brother John. She was married to Seymour J Filman of San Diego.
Margaret was born in the Bronx, N.Y. to Ellen Clerkin (Nee McLoughlin) and Patrick Clerkin, both natives of Ireland, and was raised in Rockaway Beach, N.Y., attending Stella Maris High School. She received her BSN from Hunter College and then moved to Southern California, first studying at San Diego State University and then earning a master degree in nursing as a pediatric nurse practitioner at the University of California at Los Angeles. For many years, she taught nursing at San Diego State University and then opened La Jolla Diamond, a high-end jewelry boutique.
Margaret’s large extended Irish family and friends meant the world to her. She hosted her cousins from around the world, always with zest and generosity and loved to travel throughout the world as well. Family and friends were at the center of Margaret’s life and she will be missed deeply by all she encountered along her life's journey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, March 3rd at 10am at St. Theresa Church in Briarcliff Manor, NY with internment to follow at Gate of Heaven in nearby Hawthorne, NY.
