Mary Sparrow Albert, 88, of North Branford CT, formerly of Hamilton NY, died Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Evergreen Woods. She was the beloved wife of the late Harold G. Albert, Managing Director of the American Management Association in Hamilton NY, who passed away in 1990. Mrs. Albert was born on June 19, 1925 in Ship Harbour, Newfoundland, a daughter of the late Denis Sparrow and Elizabeth Burke Sparrow. She immigrated to the US in 1928, eventually settling in Brooklyn NY with her relatives Thomas and Genevieve McHugh. She attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, St. Francis Xavier Academy and St. Joseph's College. She taught in the New York City school system and in several other schools including the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich CT and Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland OH. Married in 1951, she was a devoted wife and mother of four children: Mary Agnes Jopson of Baltimore MD, Katherine A. Albert of New York NY, Harold G. Albert, Jr. of Clinton NY and E. Jane Albert Hubbard of New York NY. She is also survived by five grandchildren (Noel Jopson, Joan Jopson Gonzalez, Maeve Jopson, Eleanor Morgan Albert, and Emma Katherine Albert Hemmings) and three great-grandchildren (Luke, Eli and James Jopson).
Although the family resided in several locations over the years (Brooklyn NY, South Bend IN, Cleveland Heights OH, Riverside CT, Baltimore MD and Hamilton NY), Mrs. Albert's interests in literature, music, art, cuisine and philanthropy were persistent themes in each. She was an avid reader, with a special predilection for fiction and The New Yorker magazine. While pursuing her own interest in watercolor painting, she was a docent at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore. She loved music of every kind and retained both a remarkable singing voice and keen memory for lyrics throughout her life. She was an adventuresome cook and diner, as well as a gracious host. She also enjoyed nature, taking special pleasure in birds, gardening and the seashore. She traveled to Europe on several occasions, including theatre, art and pilgrimage trips to London, Paris, Rome, and Salzburg. She also enjoyed several stays in San Migel de Allende, Mexico. She was a long-time active member of the Hamilton NY Fortnightly Club. In addition to work for various charities over the years, she co-founded "Worn Again" in Hamilton, an inter-church second-hand clothing enterprise serving a variety of needs including those of students, young mothers and migrant workers. She was also one of the original members of St. Mary's Social Justice Committee and was involved in the Thanksgiving project that now delivers 150 baskets of food to needy families annually.
Mrs. Albert was a generous and intellectually curious person who enjoyed life to the fullest. All who had the privilege to know her will miss her ready smile, witty sense of humor and keen insights into life.
