NELSON, MICHAEL NELS of North Branford, 61, surrounded by his family and friends left this world and returned to God on August 24th. Michael was a pediatric physical therapist who had been working with children with special needs in South Central Connecticut for nearly 40 years. He was the devoted husband of the late Rose Anna Morrow.
Michael was the son of the late Nels and Helen Nelson of Newington, Connecticut. He is survived by his sister Melanie and her husband, Kent Stoddard, and their children Daniel and Jessica of Newington; his brother Matthew and his ex-wife, Karen, and their children Michael, Nicholas, Matthew and Morgan also of Newington; and his brother David and his wife, Kay of Andover MA and their children Nels, Kaylea and Ben. He will be sorely missed by Marilyn Morrow of Stoneham, MA and Eleanor and Chester Morrow of Bradford, RI. Michael’s extended family included Beth Greenberg, John Rowland and their children Ava and Jake Rowland of New Haven. He was a wonderful friend, uncle, and cook. He loved the theatre, dancing, travel, horses and Salisbury Beach.
Michael was devoted to working with children with special needs and the community of educators, therapists and caregivers who shared his passion for service. An active leader in the pediatric special interest group of the Connecticut Physical Therapy Association, he graduated from Newington High School in 1974 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Quinnipiac College in 1978. He started his professional career at ACES in North Haven where he met his future wife and came to chair the Physical Therapy department. He went on to serve for decades in the Milford Public School System where he was fondly known as Mr. Mike. Outside of schools he also treated children at the Center of Pediatric Therapy and in private practice. On occasion, he provided instruction and mentoring for student therapists at Quinnipiac.
